Google Street View Trekker

Google is expanding its street view tool to map the world's hiking trails with 3D imagery. The launch of Street View Trekker means Google will capture images of places cars cannot reach.

The development involves strapping backpacks with 15-lens cameras to the backs of trekkers. Google intends to map castles, ruins, hiking trails and the Grand Canyon.

Google commented on the project: "We're taking another step forward with our Street View Trekker. You've seen our cars, trikes, snowmobiles and trolleys - but wheels only get you so far. There's a whole wilderness out there that is only accessible by foot. Trekker solves that problem by enabling us to photograph beautiful places such as the Grand Canyon so anyone can explore them."
