A selection of new flight routes have been added to the itineraries of some of England and Scotland's main airports, enabling tourists to travel by new means to Toronto, Istanbul, Hong Kong, Reykjavik and Bologna.
A new direct flight route from Glasgow to Toronto will soon be launched and will fly twice weekly from June to September with Canadian airline, Sunwing. The flights, which will operate on Thursdays and Sundays, will not only serve to enable the Scottish to visit the Canadian capital and explore the Ontario region, but vice versa. More than 98 000 Canadians spent almost $100 million in Scotland last year.
Turkish Airlines launched a new route in December 2011, flying directly from Gatwick to Istanbul. The flight lands at Gatwick at 12.50 and leaves again at 13.55, arriving in Istanbul at 19.45. Easyjet currently operates flights from Gatwick to Sabiha Gokcen airport in Istanbul, whereas Turkish Airlines is the only line between Gatwick and Istanbul Ataturk airport. Chief commercial officer Guy Stephenson announced that Gatwick was delighted that passengers will be able to "enjoy the rich history of this magical city".
Hong Kong Airlines will be running a new service from Gatwick to Hong Kong from 8 March 2012, with two premium cabins, 'Club Premier' and 'Club Classic'. The UK General Manager for Hong Kong Airlines said: "the concept for the all Club Class aircraft will provide passengers with a private jet style ambience." Flights with Easyjet from London Luton to Reykjavik will take off on 27 March, priced at around £60 return. This is an attractive prospect for business travellers, as well as adventure-seekers and those looking for a city break.
British Airways will begin flying from Heathrow to Bologna from 29 April. The daily service will exist alongside the current flights available from Gatwick.
