This month saw the opening of The Strand hotel in New York's Fashion District, between fifth and sixth avenues. Gene Kaufman, one of the city's renowned architects, is behind this new 177-room glass and metal property which combines old-world glamour with the modern. The lobby is a triumph of styles with mahogany columns, a water wall stretching from the heights of the lobby to the floor below which acts as a backdrop to a stunning glass spiral staircase and Bogart-style furnishings below vintage fashion photography from the Condé Nast archives.
The hotel's restaurant, which makes its New York debut, is the much celebrated 'A Fish Called Avalon' which has been a South Beach stalwart for 20 years. Dishes include the signature Bang-Bang Shrimp and Diver Scallops and Maine Lobster Linguini, both of which can be enjoyed either inside or on the outdoor garden terrace.
The rooms, simply appointed, but done so with understated class and elegance, feature mahogany furniture, green slate floors tiles in the bathroom, more of the black and white photography found in the lobby and the latest amenities including iPod docks and HD televisions.
But perhaps the hotel's real pull is the rooftop bar with retractable glass panels, designed by Lydia Marks, who brought you set designs in Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada. This true urban oasis, with greenery and decking galore, boasts stunning views of the Empire State Building.
All guests booking a 'Room With a View' package at The Strand until 18th December ($595) or between 1st January and 30th April ($495) will receive a weekend's accommodation in a superior room, their choice of 17x17" black and white vintage print from the Condé Nast archives and drinks for two at Top of the Strand, the rooftop bar.
For more information or to book, visit the hotel's website or call +001 212 448 1024.
