Bird reserves Bird lovers will be in heaven in Trinidad and Tobago, a genuine nature reserve for all kinds of birds. © Vivianne Riviere
To discover the strange diversity of the birdlife, visit the Caroni bird reserve lying in the marshes. On board a small boat, a trip to the reserve is a superb and highly colourful journey through lagoons, canals and mangroves teeming with alligators, pink flamengos, herons, and especially the scarlet ibis, symbolic bird of Trinidad that nestles in mangroves. Watching the flight of thousands of birds thriving in the Caroni marshes is an unbeatable spectacle not to be missed for any reason. A former plantain of the North, the Asa Wright Nature Centre bird reserve is equally a good observatory for local fauna: oilbirds (nocturnal birds) hide in the darkness of Dunston Cave. Boat rides are offered from Tobago to Little Tobago, an islet teeming with tropical birds living alongside birds of paradise, a very rare species.
