Population
1290000 hab.

Airports
Gateway to the country, Piarco Airport at Trinidad lies
17 miles away from the heart of Port-of-Spain. A bus service runs to the capital in roughly 1 hour for only a handful of dollars. By taxi, expect about FF 100 for a hire and a journey of 45 minutes.

Security
A land of peace and tranquility. However, stay vigilant at Port-of-Spain. Like any other popular celebration, the carnaval could lead to excesses: drunkenness, crowd effects...

Languages
English is the official language. Spanish, Hindi and Creole are also spoken.

Requirements
A passport valid for the whole length of your stay in the country is required.

Religion
The islands have a population made up of 35% Catholics, 15% Anglicans, 25% Hindus, 6% Muslims, 4% Presbyterians and a variety of other communities.

Currency
The official currency is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar (TTD). Ideally, try to bring US dollars with you as these are generally accepted all over the country, and exchange it once you get there in banks, foreign exchange offices or at your hotel reception. Cash machines are quite common and the main international credit cards can be used on both islands. Banks are open from 8:00am to 2:00pm, Monday to Thursday, and from 8:00am to 12:00pm and 3:00pm to 5:00pm on Fridays.

Local transportation
The national airlines, BWIA International, flies to both islands several times a day from the main airport at Port-of-Spain. A regular ferry service also links both islands: to cross, prepare USD 5 or 6 for a journey of 5h 30minutes. Trinidad is crossed from North to South and from East to West by two highways. The roads linking the main cities are properly maintained. You can thus easily rent a car upon presentation of an international driver's licence, in the main cities and airports. Driving is on the left. Taxis and minibuses allow you to travel around the two islands at highly affordable rates. Get this straight before entering a taxi: agree on the price because rates can be bargained with. There are also cheap and shared taxis: prepare about TTD 2 per ride.

Health
No particular vaccine is required. However, it is preferable to be vaccinated against hepatitises A and B, diphtheria, poliomyelitis, tetanus and typhoid fever. Water is drinkable, but if you are going on an excursion in the forest or in the mountains, only drink sterilised or boiled water.

Electricity
110 and 220 V. Plan an adapter for electric plugs.

Flood of tourists
325 000 visitors on average each year.

Taxes and tips
Goods and services usually include a government tax of 10%. Service is usually not included in bills (taxis, restaurants, hotels). It represents 10% of the bill's total. Tipping is common practice, in exchange for small services.
