Trinidad - mountains and rivers Trinidad's hilly, wooded landscapes remain unspoilt. © Vivianne Riviere
Formerly attached to Venezuela, Trinidad is criss-crossed by three mountain ranges. Extension of the Venezuelan cordillera, Northern Range in the north, the highest peak in the country, Mount Aripo (940 m), and slopes that drop beautifully on to the lovely beaches of the north coast of the island. Southern Range, with impermeable forest and Central Range are far lower. Rivers like Caroni, Orupuche and Ortoire, snake across the land, covered with mangroves, lagoons, tropical forests of teaks, farming plains, thriving with sugar cane and coconut trees.
