A city of opulence in the 2nd century BC, Bulla Regia has conserved houses built from an original plan. These houses have an underground floor whose rooms and central courtyard are replicas of the ground floor. Winter was spent upstairs and summer downstairs where it was cool, just like in a cave, albeit with the light of the courtyard. These homes equally display the opulence of their owners, with richly decorated mosaic floors. The designs of the mosaics provided nicknames for the most beautiful homes. Not to be missed are the 'Maison de la Chasse' (Hunting House), the 'Maison de la Pêche' (Fishing House) and Amphitrite House.
