Hand-made from start to finish, the famous wool carpets are amongst the country's most prized products. At Kairouan, where workshops are generally attached to display shops, you can watch women at work. They produce the designs from, alternating points of different colours on each yarn of cotton. As a result, a craftswoman may only produce two or three different carpets throughout her life, but multiple copies of these. As far as buying one of these is concerned, a stamp from the National Office of Artisans will certify the quality of a particular rug (either first or second grade).
