Lying in the heart of the country, Kairouan has kept its atmosphere of a traditional city, and above all, hosts Tunisia's oldest mosque. Founded at the end of the 7th century, it is especially renowned for its prayer hall adorned with dozens of marble pillars. Do not be surprised if the materials used differ from one pillar to the next, as they were taken from former Roman sites! Also stop for a while in the Souk. The medina unfolds as it would have done in the past with vaulted passageways housing porches, courtyards and mysterious silhouettes of women shrouded in veils. Another attraction is the Barouta Well in a 17th century building, it is claimed to be linked to Mecca via underground streams and rivers. A blindfolded camel decorated with multicoloured scarves is busy drawing water by turning a noria.
