The ancient fortified village of Medenine lies adjacent to the modern town. Located at high altitude, it is made up of ghorfas set around the two main squares. These warehouses could also be used as homes of which there were as many as 6,000 at the dawn of the century. Then, the ghorfas were structures of up to six floors. Their distinctive round shape and small openings looked like stacks of tunnels that have taken on the colour of the desert.
