 Shopping

In Tunisia, you are spoiled for choice. You simply need to see the incredible number of stalls lined up in the souks. Carpets or zerbias are made following an ancestral form of art and there is a wide range of choice including kilims, mergoums (short-fur carpets) and Hamma tapestries (from Gabès). Gold is cheaper than in Europe, but always check the hallmark on the medallion, bracelets or chains. In Djerba, prices are cheaper, but Tunis offers a wider choice. You cannot travel to Tunisia without at least taking back lovely painted ceramics or slippers, a leather bag or belt, or a large tray of hand-beaten copper. Bird cages, a display of the Tunisian people's love for animals, are equally splendid. Business hours are flexible, the most touristic businesses are open from sunrise to sunset, but the shops of the souks remain closed during siesta (12:00 to 14:00 pm). They are closed on Sundays, and even Fridays for some.
