The ancient granaries A little picturesque village in the south of Tunisia, Tataouine is encircled by 'ksours', ancient granaries hidden in the mountains. © René Mattes
This small town with a population of 30,000 lies in the south-west of the country. It is worth a visit for its open air market offering a variety of food and spices of all sorts as well as fabrics, floral water, henna, jewellery and wicker baskets. Tataouine is an equally excellent starting point for a tour of the Ksours (fortified villages). 12 and a half miles south of the city, you will discover several abandoned forts, before getting to Ksar Ouled Soltane which is partly inhabited. As you move along, you will discover Ksar Ouled Debbab that provided a sanctuary to the people until the 18th century. Slightly further away, there are troglodyte dwellings in the heart of the ancient village of Douirat, at the foot of the mountain at the peak of which lies a Ksar. The slope is slightly steep, but the panorama from the summit is definitely worth the climb.
