The beaches of Izmir Nicknamed the pearl of the Aegean, Izmir is Turkey's third largest city but also boasts pristine coastline Martin Siepmann/ age fotostock
On the north of the Aegean coast, Izmir, formerly Smyrne, holds a handful of old neighbourhoods, several cafés and lovely leather goods at the Keremalti bazaar. Hemmed in by a vast bay and mountains, it offers a rather breathtaking panorama. Now a modern city, Izmir has only kept a few vestiges from its past - such as its citadel - among the rare survivors of the string of wars, earthquakes and fires that have left their footprints on its history. Kusadasi, which means 'bird island' in Turkish, is the most visited seaside resort in the region. This is followed closely by Foça, Cesme, Seferihisar and Gümüldur, perhaps more original sites that offer better alternatives to mass tourism.
