Marmaris (Dalaman), Turkey

Marmaris is one of several popular beach resorts accessed from Dalaman Airport and comprises Marmaris (town) and Icmeler, among other seaside villages. Like many regions in the province of Mugla, Marmaris is nestled amongst fragrant pine tree forests. Marmaris town is perhaps best known for its multitude of all-inclusive hotels as well as its vibrant nightlife. This might not be "off the beaten track" Turkey, but it's certainly a place where you're guaranteed sunshine and a good time.

pros

  •  The marina and the beautiful wooden sailing boats
  •  Inexpensive holiday destination
  •  Bustling seaside resort with plenty of nightlife options

cons

  •  Very built-up and touristic town almost stripped of any charm
  •  Difficult to find restaurants that serve authentic Turkish cuisine
  •  The beaches are overcrowded and far from idyllic

Visit Marmaris (Dalaman)

  • To see

Head to the Marmaris Castle and Museum, where you'll be granted stunning views of the marina and cobblestone streets of the town centre. It boasts seven galleries and an interesting collection of historical and nautical exhibits. While you're in the area, stroll around the marina and admire the luxurious wooden yachts docked in the harbour. Meanwhile, the best beach views are had from the more tranquil spots of Icmeler and Turunc.

    To do

There might not be a wealth of cultural activities on offer however there are plenty of fun leisure pursuits to get stuck into. Quad safaris are particularly popular in Marmaris with plenty of people opting to get muddy, wet and dusty for the day. Definitely embark on a boat excursion to explore the nearby coves and islands: these trips make a great day out and the price usually includes lunch. Try not to miss Cleopatra Island, a small island with a stunning fine white sandy beach (rare in these parts). Another popular activity is a day trip to the Greek island of Rhodes, about a 50 minute boat ride away. Stroll the beachfront promenade from Icmeler to Marmaris (about 2 hours) and soak up the fantastic sea views.

    To think about

It's a good idea to rent a car so you can explore as much of the region as possible. While there are dolmus (the local minibuses, very cheap) these will only get you so far.

This is especially true if you want to escape the "English food here" restaurants and find an authentic Turkish restaurant; they are found in the small villages surrounding Marmaris.
  • To avoid

Avoid any restaurants that display pictures of their food outside alongside claims they serve "traditional Turkish food." Probably not the most authentic dining experience you can have...

Avoid the busy beaches of Marmaris town, and head to the quieter spots of Turunc or Datca instead.

Looking for a stunning souvenir to bring home? Skip the tacky souvenirs in Marmaris town centre and head straight for Silk Road at the marina: genuine and quality hand-painted, ceramic objets d'art await.

    To try

Turkish food is simply delicious and despite an incorrect greasy kebab image, Turkish cuisine is actually fresh and healthy too. Start with a platter of hot and cold meze, (an assortment of appetisers which can include dolma stuffed vine leaves, humus or stuffed aubergines), before sampling a grilled meat or fish dish accompanied by some kisir - a side salad of fine-ground bulgur, tomato, parsley, onion, garlic and lots of spices. Finish the meal with a sugary sweet Turkish dessert such as baklava, sutlac rice pudding, or helva cilik (a rich, sweet paste with crushed sesame seeds, nuts, sugar and honey). If all of that is too sweet, try the delicious cheese on offer such as the white variety known as beyaz peynir (like Greek feta) or the very salty hellim (halloumi). Meanwhile, a popular snack is the gozleme, a savoury pancake stuffed with meat, cheese and/or vegetables such as spinach... Afiyet olsun! ("Enjoy your meal" in Turkish).

    To bring back

Of course you can always bring some lokum (Turkish Delight) or apple tea to share with the folks back home, but why not pick up a beautiful handicraft such as a hand-painted ceramic item for your home? For those with the means, there are some exquisite kilims(tapestry woven carpets) on sale. But, bargain, bargain, bargain!
