Sharjah is the Emirate of the arts. More than 20 museums, which give an insight into its past, and an International Biennial of Contemporary Art resulted in Sharjah being awarded the title of Cultural Capital of the Arab World by UNESCO in 1998. The Calligraphy Museum is the only one of its kind in the Arab world. Arab calligraphy as well as different writing styles, means of expression, and forms of representation of written heritage are represented in important works of art. The Sharjah Aquarium opened on the historical peninsula of Al KhanIn in June 2008; home to 250 species, it offers an extraordinary insight into marine fauna. In 2008, His Highness Dr. Sheik Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, sovereign of Sharjah, opened the Museum of Islamic Civilisation, which relays the evolution of Islam through its 5,000 exhibited objects.
