It was, in fact, from this oasis, located some 136 mi south-east of Abu Dhabi in the eponymous emirate, that the explorer Wilfried Thesiger left to cross the Arabian desert (the famous 'Empty Quarter', the most arid desert in the world). Liwa has barely changed since the late 50s, and this is certainly a good thing! Its blossoming palm grove is fed by an underground river. The area is great for a stroll or a picnic in the shade, hiking or a camel ride, or even a visit to the restored fort.
