Guernsey, The Channel Islands

Guernsey is not Jersey and so much the better ! Much smaller (8 miles long and 5 miles wide), less populated (60 000 inhabitants) and especially geographically reversed : to Jersey, its southern gently sloping coast is largely sandy; in Guernsey the hills let in the sea between a few coves. Sandy area near the north, but the beaches are smaller than in Jersey.

Those who want to discover Guernsey for something other than a holiday-umbrella The island, proud of its traditions, maintains its historic fame through various events, the largest being the "Viaer Marchi" (the first Monday in July). A village festival, which takes place in the open field (on the premises of Saumarez Park, 3 miles north-east of St. Peter Port) : This "Old Market" reminds us of all of the half forgotten trades, old-fashioned chairs, wood turner, weaver, ironworker ...

You can taste the specialties of the island, bean jar soup or mixed jar striker. Stands display butter as made in the past, on cabbage leaves, next to pots of fresh cream (yellow : this is normal, Guernesy cows absorb more carotene than the other cattle on the grasslands), honey and homemade marmalade.

pros

  •  Varied and preserved landscape.
  •  Less crowded than in Jersey.
  •  Boat shuttles for Herm and Sark.

cons

  •  No nightlife after
    11 p.m.
  •  The southern coast is steep (coves are a little difficult to access).

Visit Guernsey

  • To see

To out do the pawn of Victor Hugo, who for 15 years of residence here was "appropriate" throughout the island, follow the footsteps of Renoir in Guernsey. Much less time has remained (a few months) but the coastline of Moulin Huet is striking. There are 15 paintings, particularly showing scenes of swimmers. Putting its characters to one side, the landscape does not seem to have changed since his visit in 1883.

    To do

Herm is within 30 minutes by boat from Guernsey, and Sark is within 45 minutes. The maritime shuttles (only passengers on foot, no cars) leave from St. Peter Port. Schedule a day's worth of trip per island. You can buy tickets at the port. Special rates are provided for certain times of departure. In Herm, do a tour of the the island (1 hours walk) and swim if the weather is good. In Sark, go to see Coupée (a walk along the side of the cliff).

    To think about

The network covers the whole island : it serves large and small cities, beaches and even the roads that pass in front of the hotels (all within 10, 20 or 30 minutes). Tickets are at a very affordable price : 60p per trip. You need to pay the driver (plan for some stops or small interruptions). Watch out, however, for the displayed times : they are reliable in St. Peter Port, but less on secondary roads. The bus could come early...
  • To avoid

If you are determined to drive to Guernsey, respect the speed limits (maximum of 35 mph or 56 kph) and pay attention to vehicles coming from the opposite direction. There is no room for manoeuvre, unlike most roads in mainland England: the edges are dotted with high walls or embankments. You should instead stop to make way; if not your mirror and vehicle will be quickly damaged .

    To try

In Guernsey, you can not eat just like you do in Jersey. The island has its own recipes. The bean jar soup, for example : a thick soup with beans and meat. The striker melee (the term has Norman origins): an apple brioche served in buttered slices. The honey from the island, marmalade made from lemons or oranges. The butter, cream and milk are even more pronounced than in Jersey. A question of local land fertility ...

    To bring back

Guernsey is famous for its knitted impermeable wool. Marine jackets and sweaters allow you to brave all types of weather. Anyway, try the clothes before you buy : wool is a little itchy. There are shops in St. Peter Port, you can visit a studio-shop like Jackets and Jods on the main street in Saint-Martins.

The Channel Islands: so near yet so far

Only a 50-minute flight from the UK or a two-hour ferry ride (to Guernsey) from Poole, Weymouth or Portsmouth, the Channel Islands offer sun, beaches (enormous at low tide), history (17th century houses and German bunkers) and fine local produce (potatoes, butter and cream, fish and sea food). What ...
