Lake Lough Erne

Lake Lough Erne Lake Lough Erne, Northern Ireland The lakeside is high and rocky in some parts and, in addition to the 154 islands, there are many coves and inlets Vladimira Dvorakova / age fotostock;

Northern Ireland's countryside is dominated by lakes: the most spectacular is Lough Erne. It extends over 50 miles and is shaped like an hourglass, with an upper lake (Upper Lough Erne) and a lower lake (Lower Lough Erne). At the bottleneck lies a lovely town, Enniskillen, that has maintained its historical neighbourhood around a 15th century dungeon. Visit Castle Coole 2 miles south-east of Enniskillen: the interior of this 18th century neoclassical residence is decorated with sumptuous stuccos, gilted surfaces and sculpted woodwork. The premises are surrounded by splendid gardens. Around Enniskillen, 11 miles west of the town, you can equally visit the Marble Arch Caves. They derive their name from a 33 feet-high limestone arch. Their interior is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. Round off with a tour of the lower lake from Enniskillen. The road goes through Belleek, with its renowned porcelain factory. Therafter, you will get to Archdale Marina Castle. From here you can sail to White Island in the middle of the lake. There you will discover a Roman church and Celtic statues dating back to the 10th century.
