Whether it's food, nightlife or music, the northern city of Manchester gets 'variety' down to a tee. This is even truer of its shopping: a spectrum of high street, designer and independent stores is enough to convert even the most frugal of people into big-spenders.
King Street is where you'll find the label lovers, with DKNY, Mulberry, two Armani stores and luxury emporium Flannels, another of which is just a few streets away. The Northern Quarter, with its more bohemian feel, is popular with the young and self-styled 'alternative'. Vintage shops give way to boutiques strewn with brocade pieces and kitsch accessories. The quarter also hosts exhibitions and music events, so it's worth checking the schedule on its official website. If all else fails (it won't, we assure you), Selfridges and Harvey Nichols are always on hand.
