It was constructed in the middle of the XIth century, initiated by Guillaume the Conqueror who wanted to defend the entrance to London and the Thames by erecting a fortress. From the XVth century, it served as a prison for the "unwanted" of the kingdom, political opponents, pretenders to the throne or repudiated wives of Henry VIII. Today, the London Tower is a museum housing notably the treasures of the monarchy, a set of crown jewels (crown, sceptre and rings) worn by monarchs during investiture ceremonies.
