At Derry, the Tower Museum offers captivating exhibitions on the town's history with testimonies and paintings of the Grand Siege. This milestone in the history of the city occurred in 1689. The people of Derry resisted the army of James II for 105 days before the latter retreated. This is the longest siege in the history of Northern Ireland. Each year, Derry commemorates the start and end of the Siege with parades by the Orangemen that invariably stirs up skirmishes between Catholics and Protestants. The museum lies in O'Doherty tower at the entrance to Magazine Street. This historical building is one of the entry points to the ancient medieval neighbourhood.
