The famous London square has occupied the site that formerly served as royal stables since the middle of the 19th century . It is centred around a column which commemorates the victory of Trafalgar won by the English over the French in 1805. One side of the square is skirted by the National Gallery, which displays a diverse collection of both permanent and temporary exhibitions.
