186 miles north of London, York need not be missed for its medieval neighbourhood. The town centre, forbidden to cars, deserves a round stroll. Start with Deangate: where you have York Minster, the biggest cathedral in England. Built in the XIIIth century, it has an imposing Chapter House and a Choir screen decorated with statues of the kings of England. Then cross the old neighbourhood by strolling along the Stonegate, Davygate and Parliament Street. Then stop in Castlegate, where you have the Fairfax House, an elegant Georgian house. Its interior is richly decorated with furniture, china and XVIIIth century clocks.
