An all-season destination, Hawaii is often said to be as close as an American can get to visiting another country whilst staying in the United States. Comprised of six main islands, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii Island (otherwise known as Big Island), Hawaii's landscapes, as well as its population, are immensely diverse.

Kauai is sometimes called the "Garden Isle", but beyond the island's immense beauty, it is home to a variety of outdoor activities. Try your hand at kayaking the Wailua River, go snorkeling on Poipu Beach, have a shot at hiking the trails of Kokee State Park, or even experience the thrill of ziplining above Kauai's valleys. Some call Oahu "the Gathering Place", as it is a fusion of native cultures and modernity. It is home to the majority of Hawaii's population, mainly due to Honolulu, the islands' vibrant epicentre. The scenery of Molokai remains untouched, even nowadays. Lanai can feel like two worlds. On the one hand, there are luxurious resorts and impressive golf courses, while on the other, you can go off-roading in a four-wheel drive near Polihua Beach. Maui is referred to as "the Magic Isle". Seeing really is believing when it comes to Maui. Stand among a sea of clouds atop Haleakala, the island's highest peak, meaning "house of the sun" in Hawaiian. Lastly, you have the jet-black sands of Punaluu Beach and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. Its sheer size is inspiring, being almost twice the size of the other Hawaiian Islands combined.

  Hula dancers are among many things that come to mind when you picture Hawaii; see some of the best hula dancers in the state at the three-day Molokai Ka Hula Piko Festival in May.
  Hit the road from Hana to Maui and discover waterfalls, forests, the sparkling ocean... The journey and the views are mesmerising and when you arrive, you can take some time to relax.

  Hawaii boasts many opportunities to experience its natural wonders, as well as its urban setting. Don't miss out on a horseback ride into Big Island's Waipo Valley, where taro plants are still cultivated, as they were by the settlers who arrived over a thousand years ago. Admire the pristine habitats of Molokai from the air with a helicopter tour, or see a Hawaiian sunset whilst sailing off the coast of Maui. There are submarine adventures, dolphin and whale watching boat trips, volcano tours as well as diving, snorkelling, parasailing and surfing experiences.

  Honolulu is the birthplace of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama.
  Honolulu International Airport (HNL) on Oahu is Hawaii's main hub and serves as the main point of entry for most visitors, including international carriers. You will need to connect through Oahu to get to neighbouring islands such as Lanai and Molokai. To make the most of travelling around in Hawaii, it might be necessary to hire a car. However, there are of course taxis and public transport on offer.

  Although Hawaii might seem like a paradise on earth, there are still dangers to watch out for. Strong currents can be hazardous when swimming and sun cream should be worn every day, especially if you have fair skin. The tropical sun can be extremely fierce. But for the most part, common sense rules apply.

  Coffee and macadamia nuts are among the best products to sample from Hawaii. Coffee farms are cropping up on many of the islands, where the rich volcanic soil produces first-rate quality coffee. Fish is obviously a major component of the Hawaiian diet due to the proximity of the sea and Hawaiians love their fresh ingredients.

  Hawaii is full of what might be referred to as kitsch merchandise. If you don't want to go home with the archetypal Hawaiian shirt, there are hula dolls, grass skirts, lei flowers, shell necklaces and ukuleles.
