Montevideo The capital of Uruguay is extremely dependant on tourism but is nevertheless a nice place to visit. © Cienpies Design / age fotostock
Montevideo, the capital, has a nostalgic, 1950s feel. In the streets you see very old Belle Epoque cars that seem almost new! It is very pleasant to go for a walk in the old streets from Matriz Square (also known as Constitution Square) to Zabala Square, passing via the historic Cabildo (old town hall), the Cathedral (1804) and General Rivera's house. In the port, the 19th century market with its wooden tables and lively bars is the ideal place to enjoy a steak.
