Airports

Tashkent airport is located 7 miles away from the city centre. To drive into town, negotiate your fare with the driver of a private taxi, between USD 5 and 10. The bus fare is roughly USD 1 for the same trip.
securite

Security

It still is highly recommended not to travel to the mountains and by the borders with Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan (risks of Islamist infiltrations, possibilities of explosions of land mines in some border zones). Almost all of the Surkhandarya Province (south-eastern province, which shares borders with Afghanistan and a part of Tajikistan) is closed to tourists from other countries.
It is positively recommended to travellers, on business as well as on holiday, to contact the embassy attaché before leaving or on arrival at Tashkent so as to be informed of the evolution of the domestic situation in Uzbekistan.
It is advisable to take the usual precautions when in a tourist town or on a market ("bazaar") where pickpockets can operate.
Security is sometimes not so well ensured in remote areas of the country where the presence of a foreign crowd is new and likely to tempt potential thieves.
On the road, as in the cities, some policemen may try and make car drivers abusively pay a fine to their personal profit. It is recommended, when faced to this situation, to calmly negotiate to a lesser amount...
Police: 02.

Requirements

$ A visa is required for British citizens.$$ Your passport must be valid for six months after your return date. To get a visa, you should expect a week to get it issued. It costs (single entry) 48 pounds for 7 days in the country, 55 pounds for 15 days and 65 pounds for 1 month.

religion

Religion

Roughly 88% of Sunni Muslims, some Orthodox (9%), small Catholic, Lutheran and Jewish communities and a few Buddhists.
monnaie

Currency

The currency is the Uzbekistani Som (UZS). Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) are mostly accepted in high and medium quality hotels, for car rentals and in a few shops. You can withdraw cash at the counters of only a few banks, or at foreign exchange offices in hotels, sometimes open 24-hours a day. Remember to keep your transaction receipts, they can be requested at customs on your way out of the country. For the time being, take dollars rather than pounds, as they are easier to exchange. Opt for cash rather than travellers cheques. Avoid changing your money on the black market, as this is heavily punished by the police. Make sure that you arrive at the airport with dollars in small denominations so that you can pay for the taxi and a couple of small purchases. Banks are open during the week from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
transports

Local transportation

As we speak, there is no air linking up the main cities of the country to one another. You must combine, then, flights to coach trips or fly via Tashkent. Train journeys are long, but are a good way to meet people if you have the time. Likewise, as far as coach trips are concerned, they are although a little faster than the train. You can always hire a chauffeur-driven car, without forgetting to negotiate the fare before leaving, of course. Or else, use the collective taxis. The fare is often decided according to the number of people aboard the vehicle.

Health

No vaccinesrequired. Think about possibly getting vaccinated against hepatitises A and B, diphtheria, tetanus, tuberculosis, poliomyelitis and typhoid. Epidemics can start due to heat waves.

It is recommended to drink mineral water from bottles if you are not sure of the quality of tap water. Avoid eating raw foods such as vegitables and respect the usual hygiene measures such as washing your hands before eating.

Consult a doctor before leaving.
