Bauerfield International Airport is 4 miles from Port-Vila. Shuttle buses are available to the city centre for approximately 500 VUV (£3). If you take a taxi, allow around 1,200 VUV (£7.20).

Leave your valuables in the hotel safe, and do not leave things unattended on the beach.

Languages
Bichalmar, English and French are the three official languages. One hundred or so Melanesian dialects are also spoken.

Requirements
British citizens must travel with a passport valid for at least six months after their date of return and a return or onward travel ticket.

Presbyterian 37% , Anglican 15% and Catholic 15%.

Currency
The currency is the Vanuatu vatu (VUV). Credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and American Express) are only accepted in the main hotels, restaurants and shops of Port Vila and Luganville. Elsewhere, US and Australian dollars can sometimes be used as a form of payment. Banks do not have cash machines, but they do allow you to cash travellers cheques and exchange cash in pounds. Opening hours: 8:30am to 3:00pm during the week.

Local transportation
From Bauerfield, the major islands are covered by plane (between once per day and once per week). To get to Efate, Santo or Malekula, you can use minibuses or taxis. On other islands, taxis are the only solution. It is also possible to rent a car on Efate and Santo; a national licence is sufficient. The speed limit is 30 mph in town. There is no speed limit outside of the cities, but the state of the roads means you should drive with care.

Health
Be sure to have your common vaccinations up to date, and have anti-malaria treatment. Vaccines against hepatitis A and B are recommended. Protect yourself against mosquitoes to avoid catching dengue fever. Only drink bottled or sterilised water.
