To the North, the famous Ha Long Bay is an impressive site, with 3000 granite islands and islets. The name 'Ha Long' means "dragon descending to the sea". According to the legend, a dragon came down from the mountains and sheared off chunks of the coast with his tail, giving way to the myriad islands that we see today. Classed as worldwide heritage by Unesco, the Along bay can be visited by boat in order to best discover the surprising grottoes: Hang Gau Do grotto, also known as the Grotto of marvels, made up of three rooms decorated with stalactites., the Hang Hanh grotto, 1.2 miles long, and the Tambour grotto, known for its acoustics. Also see: The Cat Ba archipelago, boasting the bay's largest island, of which half is now a national park. Flora and fauna prosper here in this tropical paradise: More than 700 plant species, 70 bird species, and moving through the emerald tinted waters, 200 different types of fish.
