The Chinese influence (1000 years of dominance) is often visible: in writing, of course, but also in the architecture and decoration. Ceramic decor in shades of green and brown, with their chrysanthemum motifs, are specifically Vietnamese, as are those in the Hue region - blue and white on an ochre background. The puppet displays on water (Hoi Tuc) representing rural life still enthrall viewers today. Nearly a thousand years old, this is a fundamentally Vietnamese tradition. The music which mixes Chinese and Indian sounds is also profoundly original.
