Previously, forest covered 75% of the indochinese peninsula. Today only 25% of this giant tropical forest remains. Mining (particularly of precious matter) and the war (13 million tonnes of bombs were dropped) are the main causes of deforestation. Nevertheless, the flora is still rich, with 15,000 plant species. Vietnam is one of the planet's rare countries where new species are still being discovered. Six national parks (Cuc Phuong, Yok Don, Nam Cat Tien, Cat Ba, Ba Be, Bach Ma) situated in the centre and the North of the country, allow observation of flora and fauna in different natural environments. Moving South, cocoa, coffee, palm, avocado, papaya, mango and bananas grow due to the ideal weather conditions.
