Hihifo International Airport is 3.7 miles from Mata-Utu. There are no taxi or public transport services. The only way of getting from the airport is to book a transfer in advance via the hotel you are staying in, or hiring a car.

Security
Problems with theft are rare, but leave your valuables in a secure place at the hotel.

French is the official language. Wallenesian and Futunian are also spoken.

Requirements
For European citizens, an identity card should be enough, but know that if you are stopping in the United States, a passport is necessary.

Religion
90% Catholic.

Currency
The currency is the Pacific franc (CFP). Its exchange rate is fixed against the euro: 100 CFP = 0.83 euro or 1 euro = 119.33 CFP. Credit cards (Visa and MasterCard) are rarely accepted, and there are only two banks in the territory: one in Mata-Utu (Wallis) and the other one in Sigave (Futuna). They allow you to exchange cash and travellers cheques issued in pounds (but preferably euros), or to withdraw money on presentation of a credit card. Use your stop-over in Noumea to get some Pacific francs as there are no banks or foreign exchange offices at Wallis airport. Banks are open from 8:30am to 11:30am and from 1:30pm to 3:00pm during the week.

Local transportation
Going from Hihifo, Futuna is reached by plane five times per week. There is neither public transport nor taxis on Wallis and Futuna. To get about, hire a car (book in advance due to limited availability) or hire a scooter. To rent a car, a National Driving Licence is enough. As well as urban areas where the speed limit is 30mph, the state of the roads also limits your speed. Drive carefully, particularly on Futuna where 50% of the roads are in a bad state.

Health
No particular vaccine is required, but make sure that your current vaccinations are up to date. Vaccines against hepatitis A and B are recommended. Also, protect yourself against mosquitoes to avoid catching dengue fever. Water is drinkable on Wallis Island, but not on Futuna Island.

Flood of tourists
The islands receive on average 1,500 visitors per year.
