Zambian culture is marked by an intermingling of different native ethnicities as well as by European colonisation. Prior to colonisation the different Zambian states had established simple trade exchanges, colonisation united them towards common economic interests, open to Western culture. Independence finally led them to the creation of a national identity, mixing ancestral traditions with modernism, which the younger generations associate themselves with.
