110,000 BC: Presence of Rhodesian man.
110 BC: Bantu farmers develop metallurgy and mining activities. The Lunda commercialise copper.
End of the 17th century: the arrival of the Bemba (originally from the Congo) into the area.
18th Century: Lozi arrive in the north and Malawians in the south. This coincided with the development of black slave trade under the control of Zanzibar. The Portuguese also had land here but are unable to expand due to the British presence.
1851: David Livingstone explores the Zambezi valley.
1871: Death of Livingstone.
1890: Extension of power of the British South Africa Company: it acquires the administrative management of countries located to the north of the Limpopo River.
1911: Northern Rhodesia is created. It rapidly becomes a major producer of copper and attracts numerous Europeans.
1953: Creation of the Rhodesia-Nyasaland federation, bringing white domination with it.
1959: Foundation of the UNIP (United National Independence Party) by Kenneth Kaunda ("Black Gandhi"). He encourages disobedience in the population.
1963: Dissolution of the Rhodesia-Nyasaland federation.
1964: UNIP win the elections. Independence of Northern Rhodesia, which is to become Zambia.
1968: Removal of white seats in the Assembly. This year also saw the regime toughen up due to the disenchantment among certain ethnicities (due to being wronged by the regime).
1973: UNIP becomes the sole party.
1975: China and the USSR support a Nationalist Guerilla army sent by the Kaunda government against the white power of Southern Rhodesia.
1980s: Internal troubles take root.
1988: Kaunda is reelected for the 6th time. Following riots, he declares a constitution based on pluralism.
1991: MMD (Movement for Multiparty Democracy) wins both presidential and legislative elections, but the economic crisis and unease in the population continues.
1996: Elections renew the Chiluba government (MMD).
1997: Toughening of the regime following a failed military coup d'état.
2002: Presidential elections bring Levy Mwanawasa (MMD) to power. He is elected head of state and government.
