Zambian tribes

Zambia has more than 70 tribes. It is one of the only African countries not to be the scene of inter-ethnic problems. Of course, some tribes are better represented than others, but there is still a real sense of solidarity between them.
The Lozi fled the kingdom of Luba Lundau in Zaire to take refuge in Zambia. They occupy the east of Zambia and originally reared livestock, led by a chief known as a Litunga.
The Ngoni come from South Africa. Fleeing from Shaka Zulu, they migrated towards the east of the country. Their culture is still intact.
The Tonga are amongst the most numerous, and have been present in the south of Zambia for more than 900 years.
The Lunda and Kaounde both come from Zaire and live in the north west.
The Bemba, originally nomadic hunters, came to work in the copper belt.
The Luvale, originate from the North of Lake Tanganyika. Their culture has been marked by the contacts that they established with the Portuguese on the Angolan border 500 years ago through trade exchanges.
