Here: Home > Travel guide > Swept away: 10 fascinating deserts

An expedition in the desert is a journey beyond space and time, like entering another dimension altogether, a vacuum. Silence reigns, a fly suddenly pops out of nowhere, as if out of a black hole and lands on your hand waking you from slumbers you hadn't known you'd entered...mesmerised, you sit on a sand dune, watching the sun and its thousand sparks of gold and oranges, the occasional wild camel strolling by, the rare nomadic shepherd. Pass by the famous dunes, revered pyramids, tourist coaches and strewn Coca Cola cans on the ground...don't be afraid to head to the heart of the desert and get away from it all, feel part of the universe. Our adventure begins only three hours away from the UK in Tunisia at the doors of the Sahara, we continue towards the Middle East, do a little detour in America's Wild West, before we finish up in the Australian outback. Grab your rucksack and join us on our adventure around the globe!

South of Africa, (just above actual South Africa), lies the Namib desert which is less vast than the Sahara but just as impressive. It forms part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park with neighbouring Angola. The Sossusvlei sand dunes are the highest in the world, some towering at 300m high and if you are lucky enough, you can stumble across desert elephants-the Namib is the only desert in the world to have elephants. Apparently the oldest desert in the world, myriad species of plants and animals can only be found here. The Namib has fascinated geologists for years but it remains very little understood to this day. Off the coast, strong southerly winds with fogs and strong currents cause sailors to lose their way; the north coast has been named 'Skeleton Coast' due to the amount of shipwrecks found there, some of which can be found as much as 50m inland, as the desert slowly takes over the ocean as it moves westwards. The desert can be accessed by airplane from Namibia's capital, Windhoek, or other cities such as Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.
