Herat, previously the cultural and artistic capital of Afghanistan, is a cosy oasis of verdure, which unfortunately suffered under the yoke of the Taliban. The city has a bazaar full of buzz, full of little booths, and an inaccessible citadel, which has turned into a military base. Outside the city boundaries the visitor can see the ruins of a Madrasah (an Islamic school) built up in the 15th century under the rule of Gaur Shad.
