One of Albania's oldest cities, it is a place where Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Turkish cultures come together.
With the medieval castle and mountains as background, Gjirokastra is full of legends. Its houses, which are beautifully decorated and made of hardened stones and timber, tell old heroic stories which inspired Ismaļl Kadare's ?Chronicle in Stone', about Albania in the Second World War. The Arms Museum adds an additional touch to the war theme. However, it is peace that prevails in the small restaurants and rooms to rent in museum-homes.
