Capoeira, a sport that is somewhere between martial arts and acrobatic dance, is regularly practised in the Salvador Mercado Modelo. Dressed in striped trousers, the dancers form extremely complex figures require considerable suppleness and very good self control. Initially, Capoeira was practised in secret by slaves who wanted to form combat troops to encourage unrest. Capoeira soon enough became a very popular sport worldwide.
