Battambang is 25 miles west of Tonlé Sap. Although it is the second largest town in the country, it is more like a big provincial market town on a large fertile plain. This shift is the most interesting thing about it; the mixture of ancient and modern. Everything seems to be at a standstill here. Only the cyber cafés and mobile phone shops remind us that we are in the 21st century. The monuments and architecture from the Angkorian period are legion. The surrounding countryside is as lush as you would like it to be. Battambang is definitely worth a detour.
