With a gigantic volcanic cone emerging from the ocean, Fogo 'the volcano island' will make hikers happy. Spectacular, with its very uneven relief, it has a magnificent caldeira 5 miles in diameter with sheer walls. Half the caldeira has collapsed due to a young volcano that, with its black cone with perfect proportions, is the highest point of the archipelago (El Pico: 2,829 m). You can climb it with a guide and be prepared for a breathtaking panorama from its summit of immense cliffs, fields of lava, vast rivers of cold lava plunging into the sea in the background (for accommodation, there is a comfortable pousada made of stone lava in Portela, at the foot of the volcano). To visit: the village of Mosteiros and its coffee plantations in the north, together with the little fishing village of Ponte da Salina.
The island bears the name of its still active volcano: the eruption of 1680 could be seen for miles around.© iStockphoto.com / Raul Rosa
