Spain's capital is a rich city thanks to its patrimonial history. Visit Madrid and its surroundings by car to discover the impressive Plaza Mayor or the historical centre nicknamed Madrid of the Austrians (Austrais).
Driving in Spain is much like driving in most European countries. Having said this, Madrid's signposting leaves something to be desired and so it is advised to plan your route before setting off. You can always hire a GPS from your car hire agency. If you do choose to leave your car at any point, the city is well served by public transport.
Madrid is perfectly served by its roads. Peripheral roads circle the city and allow the passage from one side to the other without being obliged to pass by zones with heavy traffic. You can pick up your hire car upon your arrival at the airport and drop it off at another.
Visit the capital's museums (Prado, Reina Sofia) its shops (Gran Via and Calle Fuencarral) and its tapas bars before relaxing at the magnificent Parc du Retiro. During the evening take a walk round one of Madrid's most popular places, the Plaza Santa Ana, which is lit up by a thousand lights.
