Discover Les lacs d'Ounianga Chad

Located in the north of Chad in the middle of the Sahara Desert, between the Tibesti and Ennedi Massifs, the Ounianga Lakes are a group of some fifty saltwater lakes. The green and blue waters of the different lakes constitute an extremely important and rich hydrologic zone in this otherwise desert-covered region. In addition to the lakes there are also freshwater and brackish ponds full of fish, as well as natural springs near the cliffs and dunes that line the various lakes.

The Ounianga Lakes are the remains of an even larger lake that covered the territory more than 5,000 years ago. They stretch out over an area of 8 miČ and make up the largest lake region in the Sahara.

The Ounianga Lakes were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012.
