Discover The Island of Hainan China

Bathed by the warm waters of the South China Sea, Hainan, the tourist island of the south, has plenty of superb beaches and marinas. On 4 January 2010, the Chinese government vowed that the island would become a world-renowned tourist destination by 2020. With 130 miles of coastlines and 19 bays, it has enormous potential. Only two bays have really been developed for the moment, but a third one, Haitang Bay, should soon be home to some twenty new 5-star hotels. There is even talk of a theme park, variously themed gardens and, of course, duty-free shopping centres. Popular with Chinese millionaires, this tourist eldorado is being taken over by all the new hotel complexes aimed at Western tourists that are being built. The Kempinski and Crowne Plaza are already open. 2011 alone saw the opening of the Raffles Sanya, the Intercontinental Sanya Resort and the Sheraton Shenzhou Peninsula Resort Wanning City. Planet Hollywood is currently having a 350 guest room establishment built in collaboration with the Wyndham Hotel Group. Most of the resorts are located in Sanya, the main seaside site on the island. An exception is the Sheraton Shenzhou Peninsula Resort, which is located in Wanning, on Hainan's eastern coast, and lost in the middle of palm trees, azure-blue water and breathtaking mountains. This complex overlooking the sea has 5 miles of white sand beaches lined with peaceful coves. The Sanya Phoenix International Airport is some 60 miles from the hotel. The symbol of Hainan and the highest summit on the island, Mount Wuzhi abounds with impressive cascades and rivers. For activities, you might want to try whitewater rafting on the Wanquan River; take advantage of the curative properties of the natural hot springs of Xinglong; or go for a hike on Mount Dongshan, a famous park and pilgrimage site for Buddhists. Nicknamed the Hawaii of the East, covering an area the size of Belgium, and planning to be the Monaco of Asia (Sanya is a twin city with Cannes), Hainan aims to be the future Chinese Riviera, even if it still has a long way to go! This being said, Hainan could very well one day replace Macao as the gambling capital of Asia. It is the only Chinese destination that offers a tropical climate all year round, with superb picture postcard beaches, white sand and palm trees. Ironically, Hainan is also home to a nuclear naval base (in Yalong Bay, with one of the most beautiful beaches on the island) as well as the future launch site for Chinese missiles...
