Nicknamed 'Sleeping Beauty', the small town of Mompox was born under a lucky star. The fairies really went all out to make it one of the most beautiful and pleasant towns in Columbia. This might also be due to the fact that, at about six hours from Cartagena, the village is far from any airport or motorway. Upon arrival you will quickly forget the long boat trip on the Magdelena River and instead concentrate on discovering an authentic little village that has remained preserved from mass tourism. Although the façades aren't as colourful as those in Cartagena, they evoke a rather pleasant feeling of nostalgia. Mompox also benefits from lush vegetation and the warm waters of the river. In addition to being a great place for leisure activities and swimming, the river shelters an entire ecosystem. A stroll in the Pijiño marsh makes it possible to get closer to the plants and animals. It provides the opportunity to see not only a multitude of bird species but also iguanas and monkeys! Once back in town, go on a discovery of the historic buildings and churches, which will take you on a journey through the history of this village. Start with the impressive Santa Barbara Church. This is where the Holy Week processions begin, one of the country's most impressive events.
