Almost 100 miles away from Havana, the town of Varadero on the Hicacos Peninsula boasts more than 12 miles of fine sand beach. This is a town exclusively dedicated to tourism, especially since the construction of an international airport just 19 miles away. The peninsula has an abundance of hotels, built along the palm tree-lined shores. Very popular with Canadian, European and South American tourists, Varadero is the most famous Cuban seaside resort of all. Depending on your tastes you can create a sports or relaxation based itinerary, or a combination of the two! Whatever your tastes, if you travel to Varadero you won't be disappointed.

Varadero: what to do?

If you're a fan of watersports you'll get your fix; from waterskiing, to windsurfing, jetskiing to sailing, diving or snorkelling - it's all possible here!

Varadero is the seaside resort of Cuba. Its main attraction is its endless beaches with fine white sand and a turquoise sea.

  • Its white sand beach, from where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets
  • The beautiful, turquoise waters
  • A shining sun that never seems to wane
  • A wide variety of entertainment organised by the majority of hotels
  • Everything you need on holiday in one place
  • Almost no life outside the hotel complexes
  • A bare landscape apart from the beaches

Reminders

Wear a hat and sunscreen if you are going out on the water or to the beach.

To avoid

Avoid making negative or critical comments about Fidel Castro, or ask their opinion on the political regime; this may make Cubans feel uncomfortable.

Varadero: what to eat?

Cuban cuisine is quite simple and not diverse. Chicken and rice are its main staples. It is common for potatoes, fried bananas and yams to be served with the main meal. Make it your mission to taste the local lobster!

Varadero: what to buy?

Rum, obviously !
