City or theme park?

Las Vegas in short

Whether you arrive in Las Vegas by car or by plane, there's only one thing you'll see: a bright spot in the middle of the desert. It even makes you wonder how the most unreasonable city in the world could blossom in the middle of the Nevada wasteland. Entertainment, huge casinos crackling with gamblers' fervour, grandiose shows and thrills, omnipresent neon lights vying with gigantism, excited and stupefied tourists, and finally, that hint of luxury sprinkled throughout, sum up the city of Las Vegas perfectly.

There's a reason why Las Vegas' activities are crazy and attract the most enlightened tourists. Vegas remains true to its reputation as the city of all vices! But in recent years, the city has become a little calmer and more family-friendly. All generations are welcome in Vegas (although gambling is prohibited for minors under the age of 21) and everyone can have as much fun as they want!

The Las Vegas Strip, the craziest boulevard

On the Strip, you'll find all the biggest hotel-casinos in Las Vegas: the Bellagio, the MGM, the Luxor, the New York New York... They all have their own identity, and compete with each other in terms of light and extravagance. There's something for every taste and budget.

Las Vegas, a city like no other

You're in Las Vegas - let loose! Let yourself be swept away by the pulsating atmosphere of "Sin City". Gamble in the casinos (or watch others do it), immerse yourself in the world of Al Capone at the Mafia Museum and take part in Las Vegas Rock'n'Roll, the craziest of marathons. Another of the city's unusual museums is the Neon Museum, which is sure to blow your mind with its sometimes extravagant illuminated signs.

Another look at Las Vegas

It's also possible to experience a "softer" version of Las Vegas, one that's more cultural and less frivolous. Take advantage of the city's various districts, such as Old Town Vegas or the Arts District, where it's great to wander around and sit on a terrace sipping a drink.

Las Vegas wants to redeem its green credentials

It's hard to believe, because at first glance, with its lights on 24 hours a day, its gigantic shows and its huge pick-ups that criss-cross the city, Las Vegas doesn't seem to care much about the environment. But that's a misconception, because since 2017, Vegas has been trending towards becoming a green virtuous city. That same year, the city announced its intention to become a green city. Now its infrastructure and buildings are energetically renewable.

Practical information

👍🏻 Safety

As a general rule, the United States does not present a safety risk for visitors. However, when it comes to the city of Las Vegas in particular, you need to be careful. Although the city is continuing to combat fraudulent practices, some areas are still not very popular. We advise you to stay away from these areas and stay close to the famous Strip!

Formalities and Visa for the USA

Since January 2009, nationals of visa-exempt countries, have been required to submit an online request for travel authorisation (ESTA) at least 72 hours before departure. This authorisation is valid for two years or until your passport expires.

If you have an old-style passport, you will need a visa, as this type of passport is not machine-readable and therefore not secure under US regulations. However, you can use it until its expiry date. But note that the tourist visa will cost you 80 euros. The United States requires an individual passport, whatever the age of the traveller. Babies (even a few months old) and children must therefore have a passport like adults (or an individual visa if the child is included in the passport of one of the parents who has a visa). The individual passport for children should be applied for at the Préfecture or Sous-préfecture de Police in the place of residence. It is valid for 5 years and costs 30 euros.

Because of the attacks of 11 September 2001, security checks are more numerous and longer for travellers to the United States. Don't forget to allow a little extra time at the airport.

🚕 Transport

Getting around Las Vegas is relatively easy. It's quite possible to get around the tourist area on foot, as it's fairly small and concentrated around the Stip and Downton. If you want to get away from the city, particularly to explore the surrounding countryside, you'll need a car.

⚕️ Health

No vaccinations are required, but very good insurance is strongly recommended (care and repatriation costs), in the event of illness or accident, given the very high cost of medical care in the United States. To contact the emergency services, dial 911 (police, fire brigade, ambulance).**

💳 Expenses

The prices of products displayed in shops are always exclusive of tax. State tax, in this case 7.75%, must be added. An additional local tax may be applied to hotels in certain towns, for a total that can vary from 11% to 14%. Prices quoted in the service sector (restaurants, taxis) always exclude a tip: it is customary to add a 15% tip to the price quoted. If you pay by credit card, you should add the tip yourself and make up the final bill before signing.

lightbulb_outline Editor's tip

The value of the US dollar can fluctuate considerably, so it is best to use small denominations. There are plenty of exchange offices in the major cities, although rates are higher at airports.

You should also remember to bring adapters with you, as American plugs are unusable as they are for French appliances.

Please note! You should be aware that almost all cars hired in the USA are automatic. This is slightly different from manual driving, but is very pleasant over very long distances.
