In a nutshell
Zürich is a magnificent city that will amaze you: lively and animated yet calm. Its symbol is the lion, while the bear is that of the capital (Bern). With a population of 380,000 (1.362 million in the canton), it is the most populous city in Switzerland, and could be its capital, given its many assets. Its coat of arms, which later became its flag, is blue and white, with the azure referring to the city's lake and the silver to the shoreline.

It is made up of a network of alleyways teeming with restaurants, bars and shops. It's the ideal place to go out, dine or have an evening drink. In Münstergasse, you'll find one of Zürich's oldest Spanish restaurants (since 1524), the "Bodegueta Española".

You'll find everything here: bookshops, toy shops, perfumeries, etc. and at all prices, although this enormous avenue is home to some of the most expensive brand-name shops: Burberry, Cartier, Rolex, Diesel, etc.). The city's river, the Limmat, divides Zurich into two distinct parts. You can admire it from a boat. The locals relax, sunbathe and bathe on the banks.

That's why most houses are rented out, and you have to wait between 7 and 10 years before you can get a boat berth. The Zurich-West area (a former industrial zone where the viaduct is located) is also worth seeing and is very different from the centre. Today, all the industry in this area and in the city has been replaced by offices, insurance firms, agencies and so on. The whole area is currently part of a renovation project due for completion in 2025. The former factories have been transformed into bars, restaurants, discotheques, boutiques and shopping centres, making Zürich-West the perfect place to have fun and a popular spot for young people and night owls. The area has gone from being an industrial district to a trendy neighbourhood.

The Rietberg Museum is also worth a visit, with works from Japan, China, India and Cambodia. Zurich also boasts some interesting architecture, as can be seen at Saint-Peter-Kirche, where the Romanesque tower of this ancient church boasts the largest clock faces in Europe.

Practical information
😷 Covid
As in all cities in Europe, a health pass is no longer required in Zurich, whether in restaurants, for visits to cultural venues, or at theatres. However, the situation is still likely to change as a result of the resurgence of cases of Covid-19. We therefore advise you to stay informed before planning any trip. And beware when you fly: airlines may have specific requirements before you board. In particular, they may require you to wear a mask during the flight. Please check directly with your airline to find out what health measures are in place.
🍲 Zurich: what to eat
Zeughausfelier, Zürich's most popular and traditional restaurant, is a must. The decor and staff uniforms are local and traditional. The prices are affordable and the portions quite hearty. Of course, you can't leave without tasting some of the best chocolates in the world. You must try the chocolates and especially the champagne truffles (which are to die for) from Swiss chocolatier Teuscher, one of the best chocolatiers along with Lindt. Birchermüesli (fruity muesli: lemon and apple) is another of the country's famous inexpensive specialities. You can buy it in any supermarket for CHF 1.45. And don't miss the region's most typical dishes: Kaesespaetzle (a kind of pasta cooked with cheese, onions, etc. with a German influence). Hacktaetschli is a delicious dish made with spicy beef meatballs. Zurich's cuisine has a strong German influence, as well as French (tarte tatin, macaroons, etc.) and Italian.
🛍️ Where to shop?
If you want to go shopping, go to "rue de la gare". Bally is one of Switzerland's most expensive shops, and you'll find it on this street if you want to buy local brands. A cheaper option is the Jelmoli shopping centre, where you'll find everything at great prices. If you're a girl, we also suggest you visit the swimming pool, which is entirely reserved for you. Zürich's most popular areas for going out and having fun are: the Old Town, of course, and Zürich-West, which in recent years has become a popular area for young people, with numerous discos and bars. We suggest you visit one of Zürich's most original boutiques, a 100% Swiss brand: Freitag. The shop was built from a number of colourful containers stacked one on top of the other. Created by two Swiss brothers, the brand offers wallets, bags, mobile phone cases, etc. What's special about these products is that they are made from lorry tarpaulins. The idea behind these creations was to recycle this material, which is thrown away once vehicles are out of use. The main shop is in Zurich, but their products are also sold in New York and Davos (Switzerland). Handbags and purses are a little pricey (from CHF 110). Wallets and mobile phone cases are more affordable (CHF 60). Plan a boat trip on Lake Zurich. For 1 hour 30 minutes, you can see the whole coastline (on the left, the Gold Coast, where Tina Turner has lived for 25 years, and on the right, the Silver Coast).
If you're looking for something to bring back from Zurich, we recommend a Freitag bag or item, which is in vogue throughout Switzerland. Lindt or Teuscher chocolates are also a must.
