Fashion Dominican Republic
By Amy Adejokun Amy Adejokun Section editor

Discover Fashion

Although not everyone may know it, Santo Domingo is the fashion capital of the entire Caribbean. A title that is verified every year in October during Dominicana Moda Fashion Week, which is held in the prestigious Occidental El Ambajador, an emblematic hotel in the capital of the Dominican Republic. Organised by Mirka Moral, Fidel Lopez and Socrates Mckinney, the 2011 edition was held from 17 to 22 October, with 56 collections and 30 shows in 6 days and 6 runway walks per day from 2:00pm to 10:00pm on the programme. Held just after fashion week in Paris, Dominica Moda offers a more relaxing and exotic setting, around the superb tropical garden of the Occidental El Ambajador and its vast swimming pool. Nearly 150 Dominican models walked the runway at the heart of the Oscar de la Renta runway room, the country's famous native designer. This event has been continually growing since its first edition in 2006. It started off as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the legendary El Ambajador hotel, which has been holding high society events since 1956. It offers a showcase of celebrities and VIPs (singers, actresses, Lancôme's and Lacoste's top model muses, the Minister of Tourism, Miss Universe and even the country's First Lady). Come evening, the party continues at the Brugal Titanium After Party, where guests can taste different rum-based cocktails. The designers present largely come from Latin America but also New York and London. Fashion is actually celebrated throughout the entire month of October, with many events being held. Santo Domingo is becoming an increasingly fashionable city, which can be seen with the opening of a Louis Vuitton boutique in the new Blue Mall shopping centre, with its brand name boutiques, restaurants and cinemas covering 22,000m². The place to be in the evening is the trendy district of Piantini. Elie Saab, a prestigious haute couture designer of Lebanese origin, is scheduled to make his American debut during the Fashion For Help Charity Fashion Show, which will close the 2012 edition of Dominicana Moda. One of the ten largest fashion schools in the world is, in fact, located in Altos de Chavon, 100 miles east of Santo Domingo, near La Romana. An amazing reconstruction of a medieval Italian village located on the grounds of Casa de Campo, this site sits above the Rio Chavon.
