Juan Dolio

By Amy Adejokun Amy Adejokun Section editor

Our Editorial team's advice

The seaside town of Juan Dolio, located on the Caribbean coast, about 62 miles from Santo Domingo, is less attractive than Punta Cana, the Dominican Eldorado for Europeans. Indeed, the beaches are far from seductive and the colour of the sea remains far from blue turquoise. The only interest in Juan Dolio, apart from its relatively cheap hotels and some shops, is certainly its proximity to the capital.

To see

Excursions commonly proposed in Juan Dolio, include going to Santo Domingo, the capital of the island, its colonial district and vibrant nightlife. See also the charming village of Bayahibe, and the island of Saona, a small paradise on earth.

To do

This place is full of sporting activities with tennis and cycling and water sports such as scuba diving and water skiing, as well as sailing. For golf enthusiasts, a magnificent 18-hole golf course (72 par), Guavaberry, extends over 21,325 ft and alternates gentle slopes and undulating greens with its many bunkers.

  • +  Hotels with a good level of quality.
  • +  Many sporting activities.

  • -  Dominican lifestyle reduced to its simplest expression.
  • -  The beaches are hardly inviting.

To think about

A suitcase for the summer: light clothing cotton, open shoes, shorts, shirts, T-shirts, without forgetting the bathing suit, as well as warm clothes and walking shoes for getaways in the mountains. A lightweight raincoat is useful during the rainy season (from May to July).

To avoid

The hotels may be comfortable but make sure you do not stay there the whole time, get out and enjoy the rest of the island. Take a car or bus on the well-maintained speedway (autopista), which connects the resorts along the coast, to find the sublime beaches and the Dominican population.

To try

Rich and spicy, Dominican cuisine is the result of Creole, European and African influences. Starch foods (rice, sweet potatoes and plantain), fish and shell fish as well as tropical fruits are the key foods. The stews (mondogo, sancocho) are common, with goat meat or fish cooked in coconut milk being prime examples.

To bring back

Jewellery made from amber (brown solidified resin), larimar (blue stone), leather items, baskets, naive paintings, a legacy of Indian Taïnos, CDs of merengue and bachata, cigars, liquid vanilla, jam, rum and coffee are the main souvenirs that you can bring home. They can be found everywhere on beaches and especially in local markets.
