South of the peninsula of Samana, Los Haitises National Park ('mountain land' in the Indian language of the Tainos) is a remarkable natural sanctuary, best appreciated on a boat ride, leaving from San Lorenzo Bay. Nicknamed the 'Caribbean Halong Bay', this park features mangroves, caves ornate with pre-Columbian rock drawings, a lush tropical forest, multicoloured tropical birds and manatees. The coast is peppered with little islets concealing frigatebirds and pelicans.
